Nijaz Duraković

Nijaz Duraković ( born January 1, 1949 in Stolac, † January 29, 2012 in Sarajevo) was a Yugoslav and Bosnian political scientist and politician.

Life

He studied sociology and political science at the University of Sarajevo and received his doctorate in 1979. He was there as a lecturer, from 1986 as Professor of Comparative Political Systems Research and International Relations.

From 1989 he was chairman of the Bosnian national association of the League of Communists of Yugoslavia. After its dissolution he was chairman of the successor party Socijaldemokratska partija of Bosnia and Herzegovina (SDP ); in this office followed him after 1997 Zlatko Lagumdžija. During the Bosnian War Duraković belonged to the successor of Fikret Abdic the otherwise dominated by the nationalist parties seven-member Bosnian presidency. In 1998 he was elected to the SDP in the Parliament of the Federation of Bosnia and Herzegovina. He participated in the founding of the Socijaldemokratska unija of Bosnia and Herzegovina (SDU ), a spin-off of the SDP.
