Nikitsch (Croatian: Filež, Hungarian: Füles ) is a municipality in Burgenland in the district Oberpullendorf in Austria with 1427 inhabitants (as of 1 January 2013 ), of which about 87 % belong to the ethnic group of the Burgenland Croats. This Nikitsch is the municipality with the highest percentage of Croats in Burgenland.

Geography

The municipality is located in Central Burgenland on Nikitsch Bach just 4 km from the Hungarian border.

The municipality comprises the three villages (in brackets population as of 31 October 2011):

  • Croatian Geresdorf (372)
  • Croatian Minihof ( 368)
  • Nikitsch ( 689 )

The municipality comprises the cadastral Geresdorf Croatian, Croatian Minihof and Nikitsch.

History

Before Christ's birth, the area was part of the Celtic kingdom of Noricum and belonged to the area of the Celtic hillfort castle on the Schwarzenbacher Castle Hill.

Later, under the Romans today Nikitsch then lay in the province of Pannonia.

At the very first documentary mention in 1150 were called in Nikitsch Croats and Slovenes as Uhec. The last great wave of settlement of the location by Croats took place 1565-1579. The place was like the rest of Burgenland to 1920/21 Hungary ( German West Hungary). Since 1898, had to be used because of Magyarization the government in Budapest the Hungarian name Füles. After the end of World War II German West Hungary was awarded in the Treaties of St. Germain and Trianon in 1919 Austria after tough negotiations. In severe clashes between troops of the Hungarian Soviet Republic and Croatian peasants in Nikitsch / Filež there were two fatalities. The place belongs since 1921 to the newly founded State of Burgenland (see also history of Burgenland ). In 1971, due to the community structure Improvement Act Nikitsch, Croatian and Croatian Minihof Geresdorf together the greater community Nikitsch.
