Nikolai Maximowitsch Günter (Russian Николай Максимович Гюнтер; * 5 Dezemberjul / December 17 1871greg in Saint Petersburg, .. † May 4, 1941 ) was a Soviet mathematician.

Günter studied at the University of Saint Petersburg, where he graduated in 1894 and 1915 made his PhD at Alexander Nikolayevich Korkin ( on the theory of characteristics of systems of partial differential equations). He became a professor at the University of Leningrad and played a leading role in the mathematical life of Leningrad. From 1923 to 1930 he was president of the Leningrad Mathematical Society. In 1931 he was the victim of a political campaign. He was accused of idealism and conservative mathematical thinking and he was forced as CEO of the mathematical faculty to resign. A similar declaration was signed among others by spruce, Kantorovich, Vinogradov and Delone. Günters students Sobolev and Smirnov not signed.

Günter dealt primarily with ordinary differential equations, potential theory and mathematical physics, for example in the field of hydrodynamics. He is known for a collection of exercises for Mathematics ( 1909), which was later revised by Kuzmin.

His doctoral include Sergei Sobolev and Lvovitch Solomon Grigorjewitsch Michlin.

He was a corresponding member of the Soviet Academy of Sciences.
