Nikolai Severtzov
Nikolai Alexeyevich Severtsov (Russian Николай Алексеевич Северцов; born 24 Oktoberjul / November 5 1827greg in the province of Voronezh, .. .. † 26 Januarjul / February 7 1885greg -on-Don ) was a Russian zoologist and explorer.
Severtsov studied in Moscow natural sciences. 1857/58 he undertook an expedition into the aralokaspische lowlands. He also took part in an expedition to Tashkent and researched 1867/68 the Tianchan Mountains to the sources of the Syr -Darya. He was in 1874 a member of the large Amu -Darya Expedition and headed 1877/78 an expedition to the Pamir.
Severtsov died in 1885 by drowning in a tributary of the Don. He is a namesake of the scientific name of the black breast - grouse ( Bonasa sewerzowi ) from the subfamily of grouse.
His son Alexei Nikolayevich Severtsov was also a zoologist and paleontologist.
