Nikolai Tcherepnin

Nikolai Nikolayevich Tcherepnin (Russian: Николай Николаевич Черепнин; * 3 Maijul / May 15 1873greg in Saint Petersburg, .. † June 26, 1945 in Issy -les -Moulineaux ) was a Russian composer.

Life and work

Tcherepnin studied at the St. Petersburg Conservatory with Nikolai Rimsky- Korsakov and headed here until 1918 an orchestral class. In 1899, his son Alexander Nikolayevich Tcherepnin, the composer was also born. By 1921 he was director of the Conservatory and the Opera of Tiflis. Thereafter he lived in Paris, where until 1945 he headed the Conservatory of Russian music between 1925 and 1929 as well as 1938.

Tcherepnin composed the three opera The Fair at Sorochyntsi (1923, as processing and completion of the opera by Modest Mussorgsky ), Swat - The matchmaker (1930) and Vanka the valet (1933 ), six ballets, chamber music, an oratorio ( The course of mother of God through the places of torment ), a cantata, piano pieces, choruses and songs.

Tcherepnin son Alexander Tcherepnin was known as a composer and pianist.

A significant ( Conducting ) student was Sergei Prokofiev, whom he encouraged his Symphony No. 1 Symphony Classique.
