The Nikon 1 is the camera system from Nikon and third positions itself technically between DSLRs and compact cameras. For the camera, a new bayonet and a new sensor were designed. The system has an electronic viewfinder without a mirror, although the lenses can be as SLRs exchange. The elimination of the components for an optical viewfinder, this system cameras can be produced compact compared to DSLRs.

According to the manufacturer, the camera should have the shortest shutter lag of the world and can accommodate up to 60 frames / second. The Nikon 1 has a sensor with 10.1 megapixels, the newer models V2, J3 and AW1 a sensor with 14.2 megapixels and the V3 a sensor with 18.4 megapixels.

The Nikon 1 has so far been placed on the market in four model lines:

  • S- series (Nikon 1 S1 )
  • J- series (Nikon 1 J1, J2, J3)
  • V series (Nikon 1 V1, V2, V3)
  • AW- series ( Nikon 1 AW1 )

The S and J- series has no electronic viewfinder and no flash shoe, but a flash is integrated. The S series is the most compact variant.

The V- series is the series of cameras with electronic viewfinder and hot shoe, in a flash V2 is additionally integrated in the V3 a slip-on viewfinder is optional.

The AW series is a series waterproof (up to 15 meters depth ), especially impact -resistant and cold- resistant cameras for outdoor and underwater photography. It was presented on 19 Sept. 2013, together with two associated waterproof and shock- resistant AW lenses.

Shooting

Besides photography with Scene Auto, Program AE, Shutter priority, aperture priority and manual control (P / S / A / M ) the inclusion of HD video is possible. There is also a special feature of a mode " moving snapshot" which receives a short video in slow motion, and a mode " Smart Photo Selector," which consists of a series of 20 images, which, before, during recorded and after pressing the shutter button 5 single shots automatically selects, from which the user can finally choose the best for him.

The Nikon 1 is a hybrid autofocus system is used. It automatically switches between an AF system with phase detection, 73 focus points and an AF system with contrast detection and measurement fields 135 (V3: 105 or 171 focus areas ). There are a Single Servo AF (AF -S) and a continuous tracking AF (AF -C) to choose from.

Although many of Nikon 1 lenses have a zoom, but no focus ring. However, manual focusing is via the controls on the camera still possible.

CX- format

Nikon's 1- series has a new bayonet with 39.8 mm diameter that is smaller than the current F-mount. The new sensor format is known as Nikon CX format. The sensor has a 3:2 aspect ratio and measures 13.2 x 8.8 mm, the form factor relative to the small picture format is 2.7 and the depth of field is extended by 2.9 aperture compared to the small screen format. The normal focal length of the CX format is nominally 15.9 mm, the normal lens offered by Nikon has a focal length of 18.5 mm.

The sensor is thus smaller than that of comparable Micro Four Thirds and APS-C/DX-Kameras, but larger than that of many compact digital cameras.
