Nikos Oikonomou

Nikos Economou (Greek Νίκος Οικονόμου, born February 19, 1973 in Athens, Greece ) is a retired Greek professional basketball player.

Playing career

Club career

Nikos Ikonomous career began when he signed his first professional contract with his club Ionikos Nikea suburb in the west of his hometown Athens. In the following three years, the players have been impressed and became a rising star in the Greek basketball. At just 18 years of 2.08 m wide Forward consequently got a contract from the Greek giants Panathinaikos offered. The following years were to be the most successful of his career. In addition to national league and cup successes he won with Panathinaikos the European Champions Cup and the Intercontinental Cup. Economou was now at the height of his career and for many basketball experts it was only a matter of time before he would go to the NBA. This high expectation but the player could not cope in the aftermath. Economou joined his team a year without somewhere to gain a foothold or to be able to win a title. His playing career ended in 2007 after 371 Economou Erstligaeinsätzen at Panellinios Athens.

National team career

With the Greek national Economou has 109 appearances in which he came to a total of 1,156 points ( 10.61 on average). With Greece Economou took part in three European and one World Championship and the Olympic Games in Atlanta.

Coaching career

In June 2008, Economou took over the Greek second division Olympiada saint for the first time as coach.
