Ninigi-no-Mikoto

Ninigi no mikoto (Japaneseニニギ( Kojiki :迩 迩 芸 尊; Nihonshoki :琼琼 杵 尊) ) or Amatsuhiko Ho no Ninigi no Mikoto is a Kami in mythology of Shinto. He is the son of Amenooshihomimi and Yorozuhatahime and grandson of the kami Amaterasu, who sent him to the earth in order to plant rice and to govern the earth.

Ninigi and his entourage went to the earth and settled at Himuka on the mountain Takahicho in the later province of Hyuga, south of Kyushu, where Ninigi built his palace.

He is the legend, the great-grandfather of Emperor Jimmu, and thus ancestor of all the emperors of Japan.

Amaterasu gave him the legend, three gifts, today the Japanese throne insignia ( Sanshu no Jingi ), with:

  • The necklace Yasakani no Magatama ( the imperial palace ),
  • The mirror Yata no kagami ( Ise Shrine ) and
  • The sword Kusanagi ( in Atsuta Shrine in Nagoya ).

The first two artifacts were intended to lure Amaterasu out of the cave in which they had been hiding. The sword was from her brother Susanoo found in one of the tails of the Orochi, a dragon with eight heads and eight tails.
