Nisiopi

The uninhabited Greek island Megalonisi (Greek Μεγαλονήσι (n. sg. ) (, Big Island ') also Nissiopi ( Νησιώπη ) or Meganissi ( Μεγανήσι ) is located in the extreme west of Lesbos. Together with Sigri forms Megalonisi a locality ( Τοπική Κοινότητα ) in the municipality of Eresus - Andissa ( Δημοτική Ενότητα Ερεσού - Αντίσσης ).

Location

The elongated island forms the western end of the maximum 23 m deep bay of Sigri ( Όρμος του Σιγρίου ) and protects the largest natural harbor of Lesbos from the sometimes strong winds. The small rocky island Kavalouros ( Καβαλούρος ) is 1.3 km to the southwest.

Colonization

Near the southern tip was located during the late Bronze Age settlement site. Only two buildings are located on the island today, a 20 m high lighthouse and the small chapel of Agios Georgios ( Άγιος Γεώργιος ). Megalonisi can be reached from Sigri by boat.

Nature

On the sparsely vegetated island have petrified tree trunks, partly lying in the sea, very good condition.

Conservation

As a place of outstanding natural beauty Megalonisi is under protection since 2000 ( ΦΕΚ 1176/Β/2000 ). In addition, the island is part of different protected areas:
