Nitrosobenzene is the simplest aromatic nitroso compound. It contains the nitroso group-N = O, which is connected with a phenyl group ( the benzene moiety).

Nitrosobenzene is pungent, colorless crystals in which it as resonance-stabilized dimer with the formula ( C6H5NO ) 2 exists. The green monomer is formed when dissolving, melting and vaporization of the dimer.

History

Nitrosobenzene was for the first time by A. von Baeyer synthesized by he implemented diphenylmercury with nitrosyl bromide:

It was also shown by H. Caro by oxidation of aniline with peroxomonosulfuric ( " Caro's acid ").

Production

Nitrosobenzene can best be prepared by oxidation of N- phenylhydroxyl with potassium dichromate and sulfuric acid:
