The white-bellied rats ( Niviventer ) are a rodent species from the group of Altweltmäuse ( Murinae ). The genus includes 17 species.

White-bellied rats are rat-like animals. They reach a body length 11-21 centimeters, which must be added a 12 to 27 centimeters long tail comes. Is your weight, if known, about 60 to 80 grams. The coat color on the back varies from gray-brown to red-brown, the belly is usually white.

  • Niviventer cremoriventer inhabits the Malay Peninsula, Sumatra, Borneo and Java.
  • Niviventer culturatus is endemic to Taiwan.
  • Niviventer eha inhabit the Himalayan region in northern India and Nepal and southern China.
  • Niviventer excelsior lives in southwestern China.
  • Niviventer fraternus occurs in western Sumatra.
  • Niviventer fulvescens is widespread throughout Southeast Asia.
  • Niviventer hinpoon inhabited a small area in south-east Thailand.
  • Niviventer langbianis occurs in wide parts of northern Southeast Asia.
  • Niviventer lepturus lives on Java.
  • Niviventer niviventer inhabit the Himalayan region of northern South Asia.
  • Niviventer rapit is endemic to Borneo.
  • Niviventer tenaster lives in northern Southeast Asia.

Among the endangered species include IUCN cameroni C. and C. cremoniventer, "at risk" than that, and C. culturatus that are listed as " Threatened ". For C. hinpon lacked data, the other species are " not at risk ", according to IUCN.

Systematically, the white-bellied rats are classified within the Altweltmäuse in the Dacnomys group.
