The Lower Tunguska (Russian Нижняя Тунгуска, Nischnjaja Tunguska, scientific transliteration Nižnjaja Tunguska ) is a 2989 km long right tributary of the Yenisei and southeastern Siberia (Russia, Asia).

Geographical location

The Lower Tunguska rises in the southern part of the Central Siberian Uplands just under 300 km north-east of Bratsk between about 678 m high mountains. From its source at about 550 m height, it initially flows northeastward through said Bergland and runs parallel to Lena - a few kilometers away from this. While the Lena flows, however, to the northeast, the Lower Tunguska runs but to the north and then northwest to around 340 km south of Norilsk at Turuchansk to about 5.5 m height to flow into the Yenisei.

Catchment and inflows

The catchment area of the Lower Tunguska, which is located mainly in the great Tunguska region, comprising about 473,000 km ². Her biggest tributary is the Kotschetschum which opens from the north at Tura. Her other tributaries include Nepa and Ilimpeja.

Hydropower plant Turuchansk

For about 120 km above the mouth of the Lower Tunguska located in the Yenisei point is the hydroelectric plant Turuchansk with a 9400 km ² and 45 km ³ large reservoir and a 200 m high dam in planning.

Other rivers called Tunguska

About 100 km to the north of the source area of the Lower Tunguska springs the shorter Tunguska, which flows mainly north-west and 600 km to the south flows into the Yenisei. In addition, the Angara underflow Upper Tunguska means.
