No post for the Colonel ( Original title: El Coronel no tiene quien le escriba; international title: No One Writes to the Colonel) is a Mexican -French- Spanish Drama from 1999 directed by Arturo Ripstein, the screenplay was written by Paz Alicia Garciadiego. based on the novella the Colonel has no one who writes to him by Gabriel García Márquez in 1961.

Action

A former colonel who took part in the War of a Thousand days lives with his sick wife in a small town. The family suffers from financial difficulties. The Colonel is waiting for him 15 years ago awarded pension. Once a week he goes to the port and asks if post had arrived for him. Just him as well as his wife is aware that he does not get more notice board. Nevertheless, the weekly port visits are maintained.

Movie service wrote that the film set " with the Latin American life misery apart " and thematize " the inevitability of fate ." The " sepia tone images " bring " a quiet melancholy expression, which has long since crept beyond all hope in life and determined all the sensations ."

Awards

The film was nominated in 1999 for the Golden Palm. Paz Alicia Garciadiego was nominated in 2000 for Best Screenplay Adapted for the Goya. Arturo Ripstein won the 2000 Latin America Cinema Award at the Sundance Film Festival.

Background

The film was shot in Veracruz. Its production costs amounted to an estimated 3 million U.S. dollars. Following its world premiere on 2 June 1999 in France, the film on 15 September 1999 at the Toronto International Film Festival in January 2000 and was shown at the Sundance Film Festival. In Spain, approximately 128 thousand moviegoers were counted.
