Nóatún (mythology)

Noatun ( Old-norse " space ship " ) is in Norse mythology, the residence of the sea god Njörðr and after the palaces Grímnismál one of the gods in Asgard. Snorri Sturluson reported in the Gylfaginning and in Skáldskaparmál that Njörðrs wife Skadi did not want to live in noatun the sea, but rather in the snowy mountains.

" Noatun is the eleventh: there has Njördr Edifies the hall. Without My (mis ) and the stain of men prince Managed high house. "

The Old Norse name noatun means " Ship City, Ship space ". The first part of the word ( NOA ) is etymologically to the Indo-European ( reconstructed ) Word * Naus ( Old Norse: NOR, Latin: navis ), which has the meaning "ship". The second part ( -tun ) is part of the Old Norse word Tún ( " courtyard, city "; cf. Engl town - " city ."). The meaning of the name noatun thus also highlights the relationship between Njörðr and the sea.
