Nolan Ryan

  • Major League Baseball All- Century Team

Lynn Nolan Ryan Jr. ( born January 31, 1947 in Refugio, Texas ) is a former American professional baseball player in the New York Mets, California Angels, Houston Astros and Texas Rangers in MLB. Ryan played the position of the pitcher and is known for his long and successful career that lasted 27 years and in which he holds the eternal MLB records for strikeouts ( 5,714 ) and no- hitters (seven). He also won with the Mets 1969 World Series eight times and was elected to the All- Star team. He was elected with 98 % of votes in the Baseball Hall of Fame in 1999. Ryan is currently president of the Texas Rangers. In gratitude for his services, the Angels, Astros and Rangers have the player's shirt number 34 retired forever.

Ryan was famous for his extremely fast fastball, to break the " sound barrier" of 100 miles per hour on a regular basis and "Ryan's Express" was called. His MLB record of 5,714 strikeouts and seven no- hitters speak for themselves. Critics saw in Ryan but also a one-dimensional power- pitcher, because he is also in the negative categories walks allowed ( 2,795 ), wild pitches (277 ) and lost games ( 292), the number one. Nevertheless, he was inducted into the Baseball Hall of Fame in 1999 with 98.2 % of all votes in the first ballot.
