Nolina parryi "A miracle of nature"

Nolina parryi is a species of the genus Nolina in the family of asparagus plants ( Asparagaceae ). English common names are " Parry's Nolina " and " Giant Nolina ".

Description

Nolina parryi is derived making with stature heights of 1 to 2 m. Sometimes you formed in the upper half of the stem rosettes. The variable, stiff, bright green to blue -colored leaves are 50-120 cm long and 20-40 mm wide. The leaf margins are toothed.

The inflorescence is 1.2 to 4 m high and 0.2 to 1.3 m wide, with dense, irregularly arranged branches. White to cream-colored flowers are 3 to 5 mm long and 2 to 2.5 mm wide. The flowering period extends from April to June.

The maturity in the round woody capsule fruits are 9-15 mm long and wide. The light brown, ovoid to oblong seeds are 3-4 mm long and 2-3 mm wide.

Nolina parryi is hardy to minus 10 ° C.

Distribution and systematics

Nolina parryi is common in the U.S. state of California at altitudes of 900 to 2100 m. It grows on rocky or sandy slopes, in woodland and is associated with Yucca brevifolia, Yucca schidigera, Yucca baccata, and various cacti species.

Nolina parryi is a member of the Section arborescentes. Exceptionally large specimens are located in the Mojave Desert. Characteristic features are the huge inflorescences of individuals in the Kingston Mountains.

The first description was in 1879 by Sereno Watson.
