The nonadecanoic is a saturated long-chain fatty acid with an odd number of carbon atoms and belongs to the group of alkanoic acids.
Occurrence
Like most long-chain fatty acids with odd carbon number comes nonadecanoic in nature only rarely and in low concentration.
From natural sources it was first isolated only from the fat of bovine kidney.
Recent work find nonadecanoic then also in higher plants, such as to 9.95% of total fatty acids in the green parts of dill ( Anethum graveolens ), as well as in a red alga ( Hypnea Musciformis ).
And microorganisms form nonadecanoic acid, such as Streptomyces scabiei subsp. chosunensis.
In addition, it has in the insect world for termites a meaning: The soldiers of the termite Termes Rhino marginal use, among other nonadecanoic in their defense secretion.
Production and representation
Nonadecanoic acid can be prepared by oxidation of 1- eicosene, with potassium permanganate.
Pharmacology
As well as other fatty acids, odd, even nonadecanoic of vitamin B12 deficiency is accumulated increasingly.
This fatty acid is also effective against some human cancer cells as a cell poison.
Use
Because of their rarity and their low levels in biological materials, it is - as tridecanoate and heneicosanoic - often used in the gas chromatographic analysis of fatty acids as an internal standard.
