Nongoma Local Municipality

Nongoma (English Nongoma Local Municipality ) is a town in South Africa's Zululand District in the province of KwaZulu -Natal. The administrative center of the municipality is located in the town of Nongoma. Mfanawendlela Ben Mabika is the mayor. The IFP represents the majority in the City Council.

The name of the village comes from the name of the kraal Zwides, the king of Ndwandwe currently Shaka. The Zulu King Goodwill Zwelethini and the royal family live in Nongoma. 2007, the municipality had 244 501 inhabitants. It covers an area of ​​2182 square kilometers.

Geography and economy

Nongoma is the second largest municipality ( by number of inhabitants and area) of the district of Zululand. It lies in the east of the district and in the north of KwaZulu-Natal. The community consists of more than 98 percent of rural area. The only urban settlement is Nongoma town. Other settlements in the parish are Ezilonyeni, Mvulazi, Mahashini, Sidinsi and Bhekumthetho.

Large parts of the population are unemployed and the wage level is low. In addition, the level of education is very low. Only 33 percent of the population have primary education and only 5.3 percent completed the twelfth grade.

Agriculture is the main industry in the region. However, the need for development is so great that such projects at the provincial Ministry (KZN Department of Agriculture and Environmental Affairs ) and the Ministry of State ( National Department of Land Affairs and Agriculture ) have priority. However, not once has 20 percent of the agricultural community saw a high potential.
