Nordugrid

The term NorduGrid is a Grid ( a composite of many individual computers ) under the control of the NorduGrid Collaboration. Currently, about to reach about 35,000 processors ( CPUs). Many associate the name but also the cooperation of five Scandinavian countries on the basis of a Memorandum of Understanding on the Nordic Council for the Promotion of grid computing.

The agreement includes the development of their own free Grid middleware ( necessary for the management and control of distributed computing software), the Advanced Resource Connector (ARC ) is used, since August 2002. Focal points of the insert are found in Scandinavia and Switzerland. But in Eastern Europe, Russia and Australia, there are some clusters of the grid. The NorduGrid initiated several spin- off projects that enable further research and development work. This includes in particular the EU project KnowARC and the Nordic DataGrid Facility.

Objective

The NorduGrid Collaboration is constantly improving its infrastructure further to more robust, scalable and easier to be portable to other platforms. The possibilities of the middleware will be expanded and refined. This will set new user groups for sharing their resources are obtained, which can not yet benefit from the technology today. All developments are distributed as free software. It also supports the development of Grid standards through contributions to the Open Grid Forum ( OGF ).

Computing Resources and the Community

Public or private organizations from industry or academia with an interest in Grid computing are invited to participate actively in the NorduGrid. To this end, a virtual organization (community virtual organization ) launched, can be accessed via the treasury by the introduction of computational resources on the Grid.
