Norman Brookes

Sir Norman Brookes, KBE ( born November 14, 1877 in Melbourne, † September 28, 1968 ) was an Australian tennis player.

His greatest successes were both victories in the men's singles at Wimbledon in 1907 and 1914. He was thus the first Wimbledon champion, who was not British. The second win was the left-hander after a seven year absence from the tournament. He also won with compatriot Gerald Patterson 1919, the U.S. Open in doubles.

Twenty-five times he stepped up to the individual 1905-1920 for Austraasien in the Davis Cup and was able to make 18 games victorious; fourteen doubles, he won ten.

In 1938 he was knighted. Since 1911 he was married to the Australian writer Mabel Brookes. The couple had three daughters.
