Norristown is a municipality in Montgomery County in the southeastern part of the U.S. state of Pennsylvania with 31 282 inhabitants ( 2000).

Norristown was founded in 1812 and is the administrative seat ( county seat ) of Montgomery County. The municipality is located on the Schuylkill River, about 30 km northwest of Philadelphia and about 5 km northeast of King of Prussia. In 2000, Norristown had a population density of 3421.5 inhabitants / km ² and an area of 9.1 km ².

Norristown was named after Isaac Norris, a deputy of the Pennsylvania colonial Council, who commissioned the production of the Liberty Bell. The area in the Norristown is today, was given by William Penn, founder of Pennsylvania, to Norris and was named after him, originally William town.

Norristown is the setting for the novel The Lovely Bones by Alice Sebold. The film adaptation of the same name from 2009 takes place in Norristown.
