North Caucasus Railway

The Severo- Kawkasskaja schelesnaja doroga or North Caucasian Railway (Russian Северо - Кавказская железная дорога ) is one of 17 branches of the Russian state-owned railway operator Rossijskije schelesnyje dorogi ( RŽD ). It is located in the city of Rostov -on-Don.

General data

For rail network in the North Caucasian railway owns most of Railroads in the Federal District Southern Federal District, in particular all connections in the Caucasus foothills and in the Russian part of the Caucasus, thus subjects of the federation as the Rostov Oblast, the regions of Krasnodar and Stavropol and the Republics of Kalmykia, Dagestan, Chechnya, Ingushetia, Adygea, North Ossetia -Alania, Kabardino -Balkaria and Karachay -Cherkessia. The total length of railway operated by the North Caucasian railway lines is good 6300 km with 403 stations and stops (as of 2007). In 2007, almost 38 million passengers in the distance and almost as many were transported in transport.

History

The first railway line from today's network of Severo- Kawkasskaja schelesnaja doroga was completed with the connection between shaft and Aksai Well in 1861. By 1875, this line was connected to Rostov and at the same time ( 1872-75 ) was created with the railway line Rostov - Vladikavkaz, the hitherto most important thoroughfare of the North Caucasus network. Today this route is part of the highway, the on-Don (and thus Moscow and other Russian cities ) on Chechnya and Dagestan Rostov connects with the west coast of the Caspian Sea and Azerbaijan.

Until the Second World War a number of other routes were moved, which account for a large part of today's network. Among the most important ones include the compounds of Armavir via Tuapse to Sochi and Adler ( this runs behind the Georgian border continue to Sukhumi ) and random routes, inter alia, to Nalchik, Kislovodsk, Novorossiysk and Elista. Starting in 1936, most carriers have been, starting with the distance Mineralnye Vody - Kislovodsk, electrified.

One of the largest railway stations of the North Caucasus network today includes the stations in Rostov-on- Don, Krasnodar, Armavir, Mineralnye Vody and Sochi.

Future Development

As part of the preparation for the 2014 Olympic Winter Games, to be held in Sochi, there are extensive modernization and expansion plans for the long-distance, but mainly the transport in the Russian Black Sea region. Thus was started in September 2008 with the establishment of the first of the two planned new cargo terminal in the city. It will include the modernization of the entire railway infrastructure in and around Sochi, as well as construction of new links, including a direct connection from downtown to the airport.
