North Maluku

North Maluku ( Maluku Utara Indonesian ) is an Indonesian province, which covers the northern part of the archipelago of the Moluccas.

Geography

Since 4 August 2010 Sofifi is the capital of the province on the western coast of Halmahera. The previous capital was Ternate, the largest city in the North Moluccas.

The main islands of the province are Halmahera, Ternate, Tidore, Bacan, Obi, Morotai, and the Sula Islands.

Population

History

The islands of Ternate and Tidore were significant Sultanate, which gained influence through the spice trade in the 16th century. Nutmeg and cloves were produced in Ternate, Tidore, Motir, Makian and Bacan. Later, Spaniards, Portuguese and Dutch fought for supremacy before, the Dutch were able to prevail and the islands built in the Dutch East Indies.

The entire Moluccas formed until 1999 a joint Maluku province. Then the North Moluccas were separated as a new province.

Economy

Economically, agriculture dominates, on Halmahera gold, nickel and cobalt are mined. During the political unrest from 1999 to 2002, tourism came to an almost complete halt. Since 2006 the situation has largely calmed down.
