Northern Caiman Lizard

Krokodilteju (Dracaena guianensis )

The Krokodilteju (Dracaena guianensis ), also called Panzerteju, is a living in rich vegetation wetlands lizard from northeastern South America.

Krokodiltejus be up to 1.2 meters long. They are olive green to dark brown in color, strong and stocky. Their tail is laterally flattened and strong. On the back they have large keeled scales, which are surrounded by smaller, granular scales. The tail is similar by two rows of plate-like scales of a crocodile tail.

Krokodiltejus live primarily on the ground, but also climb - especially for the night - on the banks of bushes and low trees. They feed almost exclusively on freshwater snails, whose shells they can break easily with their strong jaws. The eggs the female lays often in the nests of tree termites.
