Norwegian speciedaler

Speciedaler is the name for a type of coin that was used 1560-1875 in Denmark and Norway. Similar coins were known in German-speaking countries as species Thaler. A Speciedaler is a thalers in specie; that is, one actually embossed, visible Kurantmünze, which usually shows a picture of the Coin Lords on the front. As Abbreviations were Spd. or Sp common.

History

Denmark-Norway from 1380 to 1814 was a confederation between Denmark and Norway under Danish supremacy. The Danish king was King of Norway at the same time. The coin and currency history of both countries is closely intertwined.

A Speciedaler was originally a large silver coin with a weight of just 30 grams and a silver content of 87.5 %. Later banknotes in denominations of one or more Speciedalern were printed. Initially, the figure of 6 Speciedalern at 96 shillings ( dän / norw. Skilling ). Due to the decreasing silver content of the Skillings Speciedaler were traded frequently to 120 shillings. Under Charles III. Johan was the place value officially established ( 1 place = 24 shillings ) to 120 shillings or 5. The first Norwegian Speciedaler was coined in Denmark. The Norwegian production began in 1628 in Christiania (now Oslo) and was continued from 1686 to 1873 in the Royal Mint of Kongsberg.
