Notation Interchange File Format

Notation Interchange File Format ( NIFF ) is a data format for the exchange of musical notations of music notation programs.

The NIFF project was started in February 1994 in order to create an open format that allows the exchange of music between different music OCR programs, music editors and music notation programs.

The NIFF format itself is based on RIFF ( Resource Interchange File Format), a container format for storing multimedia content, which was developed in 1991 by the company Microsoft and IBM.

Through the MusicXML format NIFF has become obsolete. The NIFF SDK is received via the NIFF SDK archive for information.
