Nothhelm of Sussex

Nothhelm (also Nothelm Well, Nunna, † 717/724 ) was a subregulus ( viceroy ) of the Anglo-Saxon kingdom of Sussex, who reigned around the years 688/692 bis 717/724.

Life

Nothhelms parents are unknown. However, he was related to the royal house of Wessex. His sister and his brother Nothgyth Eolla is documentary evidence.

Sussex was caught in the 680er years under the supremacy of Wessex. King Ine of Wessex and sat Nothhelm watts to 688/692 as the dependent subreguli ( sub- kings ) in a Sussex. Presumably, the establishment of several sub- kings served to counteract emerging independence aspirations of the country. First Nothhelm reigned jointly with Watt, who disappeared from the sources after 700. In the year 710 King Ine attacked with Nothhelms support to the Britannic King Geraint of Dumnonia. After 714 Æthelstan 's (fl. 714 or 717/724 ) assigned as co-regent in Sussex, who probably reigned in the eastern part of the country as a king.

From Nothhelm several charters have been preserved as copies. In the year 692 he transferred substantial land in his possession to his sister Nothgyth so that they, the " salvation of his soul," there was found a monastery. These and a further donation of 20 hidas to Bishop Eadberht of Selsey, had the term "Upper King ' Ine, be whose father Cenred, who probably reigned as a king in Dorset and countersigned by Watts. Smaller land transfers could, in consultation with its Mitkönigen watts or Æthelstan even without the consent Ines Nothhelm apparently.

Nothhelm had to be expressed a desire to 720 buried in Selsey Abbey monastery. His exact date of death is unknown.
