Notice period

The period of notice is the contractually agreed period of time between receipt of notice and the date of the effected thereby and sought termination of the contractual relationship that which is at least still has to be present for a unilateral termination to the intended date of the contract end can ever be legally effective.

Notice periods are regularly covered by a contract for continuing obligations (rent, lease, employment contract, employment contract ), often in conjunction with a permitted termination date ("... end of the month ", " ... the end of the calendar quarter ").

The reason for the agreement of a notice is to allow both parties, in the event of termination be able to complete the contract without undue time pressure and looking for another contractor.

In some countries exist in certain areas of law for the protection of the weaker party minimum notice periods, such as the statutory minimum notice periods in employment or in tenancy law. The time calculation is based on the legal provisions of the country.
