Nova Varoš

Nova Varos ( Serbian Cyrillic Нова Варош ) is a small town in the southwestern Serbian mountain region between the mountains of Zlatibor, Murtenica, Javor, Golija and Zlatar, 280 km south of Belgrade. It is the administrative headquarters of Nova Varos Opština.

Geography

The city was built at an altitude of 953 m at the foot of Zlatar and is close to the Zlatar Reservoir on the highway Belgrade - Bar in the vicinity of Nova Varos are three more reservoirs - they are mainly used to generate electricity, but are also used for tourism. Due to its high elevation, the air is considered in Nova Varos as pure, therefore, the health tourism and winter sports are developed in this region.

The area of ​​the municipality of Nova Varos is 584 km ². Administratively, the church belongs to the district Zlatibor ( Zlatibor Okrug ).

Population

According to 2002 census, 90 % of the population regarded as Serbs.

History

Nova Varos belonged until 1913 under the Turkish name Yenivaroş the Sanjak of Novi Pazar.
