Novaci, Romania

Novaci is a town in Gorj County in Romania.

Geographical location

Novaci is located in the foothills of the Southern Carpathians, on the south side of Parang mountains by the river Gilort. The district capital Târgu Jiu is located about 35 km southwest.

History

The present city Novaci originated from a variety of pastoral settlements. The first mention was made in 1502 at the time of the Wallachian prince Radu cel Mare, where indirect documentary evidence let's assume that the place already during the reign of Prince Mircea cel Bătrân ( 1386-1418 ) was. 1847 a customs station was set up. 1968 Novaci received the status of a city.

The main industries are tourism, timber extraction and processing and livestock (mainly sheep ).

Population

As of the 2002 census, lived in the town of 6,105 people, including 6,064 Romanians and 35 Roma. Approximately 2,800 lived in Novaci, the other in the four incorporated towns.

Traffic

Novaci has no rail connection. The city is located on the National Road (drum National) DN 67C, the here of the leading over the Parang Mountains, opened in 1935 Trans Alpina equivalent.
