Novopavlovsk

Nowopawlowsk (Russian Новопавловск ) is a city in Stavropol (Russia) region with 26,562 inhabitants (as of October 14, 2010 ).

Geography

The city is located in the northern Caucasus foothills about 230 km south-east of the regional capital Stavropol at the Kura ( not to be confused with the homonymous Kura in Georgia and Azerbaijan).

Nowopawlowsk is the administrative center of the Rajons Kirowski.

The town lies on the railway line opened in 1875 Rostov-on- Don - Vladikavkaz, the main line of the North Caucasus Railroad. The station of the city is called Apollonskaja.

History

The village was founded in 1777 in connection with the establishment of a after the patron saint of the former Tsar Paul, the Apostle Paul (Russian Pavel ) named fortress during the Azov- Mosdoker defense line along the southern boundary of the former empire. The resulting when the Terek Cossack Cossack village fortress was named Nowopawlowskaja (Russian nowo - for - new ).

In 1981, the city charter was granted under the present name.

Culture and sights

In the Cossack village of Solskaja Rajons Kirowski is the Nikolai Church ( Свято - Николаевская церковь / Swjato - Nikolayev Tserkov ) was obtained ( 1902) the oldest church in the area.
