Nuchatlaht First Nation

The Nuchatlaht are Indians and live on Vancouver Island off the west coast of Canada. They speak Wakashan and English and are among the Nuu- chah- nulth. Compared to the Canadian government, they are represented mainly by the Nuu- chah- nulth Tribal Council.

Only 37 of the 180 members distributed in April 2010 to 11 reserves ( a total of about 94 ha) in Esperanza Inlet and Nootka on Iceland. They share with the Ehatteshaht the Sound. Most Nuchatlaht live 7 (approximately U- klu - chih spoken ), this place has about 50 inhabitants and around 12 km from Zeballos is located in the reserve Oclucje.

History

The eleven reserves have been assigned to them in 1889 by Commissioner O'Reilly. Your original living room centered around Nuchatlitz in the north of Nootka Iceland.

1881 included the Ehattesaht 147 tribal members, 1891 only 105 In April 2010, lived on the reservation 37 people, another 17 in other reserves, 126 outside the reserves ( in May 2009 there were 114) - a total of 180 members.

Their chief (English Chief ), Walter Michael Sr., advise him three Councillors ( Councillors ). As one of the few bands to the Nuchatlaht have decided to maintain the inherited chieftain system. The Chief still consults with his parents, Alban and Rose, from whom he has inherited the chief office in 1999. In April 2006, he signed a contract in which the Nutchatlaht get access to the Strathcona Timber Supply Area. To this end, they received $ 330,000 and is entitled to 48,000 cubic meters of wood.
