( Formerly known as Colonia Suiza) Nueva Helvecia is a city in the south of Uruguay.

Geography

It lies in the southeastern part of the Department of Colonia near the Ruta 1 The distance to the eastern state capital Montevideo is 120 km. In the southwest lies the neighboring town of Colonia Valdense. About 70 kilometers west of Nueva Helvecia is Colonia del Sacramento, the capital of the department.

Population

History

Nueva Helvecia was founded on April 25, 1862 by Swiss immigrants, but also those of German, French and Austrian descent. On December 11, 1952 Nueva Helvecia was classified by the law Nr.11.892 in the category " Ciudad ".
