Numbering scheme

Under Numbering the " making, issuing, managing, and applying numbers" for Nummerungsobjekte is understood (DIN 6763 ). Nummerungsobjekte the purposes of this definition, objects, media, people or situations can be. A number referred to in the Numbering is a fixed sequence of characters such as letters, numbers and special characters. In the data processing is to number the term " key " is used, the number assignment is also key selection, key distribution or rare encryption ( but that can be confused with encryption cryptography ) called. The DIN standard was revised in 1985 and defines various terms now different. Even otherwise, different terms are used synonymously to participate in the literature, but not always used partly congruent.

In the electronic data processing is the key distribution / key choice in data modeling of objects and their relationships, particularly as a database key, of great importance. Identifying key may also be used in various data structures, such as associative array.

Tasks

  • Identification: In companies and other organizations, in particular in their information systems, objects need to be addressed as the subject, situation or person clearly and unambiguously.
  • Classification: The assignment of objects to certain classes (classification) is the second important task of Numbering. It is used for finding similar objects such as parts, books, resources, telephone subscribers (prefix), manufacturing families, etc.
  • Other tasks: Integrity and improved reliability.
  • Information.

Number system

A number system is the description and explanation of the appropriate classification and grouping of numbers or number parts ( according to DIN). In general, the number of systems or the number of system components in are " systematically " / " system-free " and " not speaking " / " half speaking " / " fully speaking " broken.

  • Systematic
  • Not speaking
  • Full speaking
  • Half speaking
  • System free

Numbering plan

The Plan is an overview of the pre-established meanings of classifying parts number ( DIN ). There are hierarchical ( decimal) and juxtaposed ( decadic ) numbering plans built. The numbering plan of the " DK " is an example of a Decimal. In a sibling number plan the classes of each sign can be arbitrarily bound to each other. The numbering of part families by Opitz is an example of a combination of hierarchical and sibling elements of a numbering plan.

A numbering scheme is the representation of the formal structure of numbers and their spelling.
