Nuno Gonçalves

Nuno Gonçalves ( 15th century *, † after 1490 ) was a Portuguese painter of the 15th century. He is considered the most important painter of his country at that time.

Life

Gonçalves was active 1450-1490. 1450 he was appointed by King Alfonso V court painter. About his life little is known. As his most important work applies the altarpiece The Adoration of St. Vincent, a polyptych, which today is located in Lisbon at the Museu Nacional de Arte Antiga. Among other historical figures, he is seen on Padrão dos Descobrimentos in Belém.
