Nurmsi ( German also Nurmsi ) is a village (Estonian küla ) in the rural community Paid ( Paid vald ). It is in the district mittelestnischen Järvamaa.

Description and History

The village has 103 inhabitants (as of 1 January 2010). It is located ten kilometers east of the city Paid. The settlement was first mentioned in records in 1564 under the name Nurmis.

In Nurmsi archaeologists have discovered grave fields from the Iron Age. There both cremated and unburnt remains of corpses were found. Excavations took place in 1905, 1907, 1921/23 and 1943/35.

During the Soviet occupation of Estonia was Nurmsi, near the Moor of Mündi, an airfield of the Soviet Air Force. Runway with a grass surface having a length of 2.500 meters. The plant was converted to agricultural land after regaining of Estonian independence in the 1990s.
