Nyomda River (Kostroma Oblast)

The Njomda near its confluence with the reservoir Gorkier

The Njomda (Russian Нёмда, sometimes also transcribed as Nemda of Russian Немда ) is a 146 km long left tributary of the Volga in the oblast Kostroma and Ivanovo in the European part of Russia.

Description

The Njomda rises on the southern edge of the Galitscher heights, about 4 km west of Selo Palkino in the western center of Kostroma Oblast. From there it flows strongly meandering south through the forests dominated by south-western part of the oblast.

Along the course of the Njomda in Kostroma Oblast are only small villages, including Kadyj, the center of Rajons same name. Below Kadyj the Njomda is navigable, because from here the backlog of Gorkier dam affects the flow.

Shortly after they crossed the border to Ivanovo, the Njomda reached the pent-up reservoir for Gorkier Volga. On the right bank of the mouth is the village Sawraschje, birthplace of the Soviet film director Andrei Tarkovsky Arsenjewitsch.

The Njomda is fed mainly by snowmelt and average frozen from November until mid-April.
