Nyurba

Njurba (Russian Нюрба ) is a small town in the Republic of Sakha ( Yakutia ) (Russia) with 10,157 inhabitants (as of October 14, 2010 ).

Geography

The city is located in the Mitteljakutischen valley, about 850 km northwest of the capital Yakutsk Republic, the river Wiljui, a left tributary of the Lena. The climate is continental.

The city is Njurba the Republic administratively subordinated directly and as the administrative center of the homonymous Rajons ( Ulus ).

Njurba has an airport and a pier at Wiljui.

History

A place of site of the present city has been known since the mid-18th century. The modern settlement was begun in 1930. During the 1950s it became the base for exploring the westjakutischen diamond deposits. 1958 was the place the status of an urban-type settlement and 1998 city law.

Culture and sights

In Njurba existence since 1978, a museum of International Friendship called history and heritage museum.

Economy

The Russian state-owned diamond company ALROSA has Njurba in a diamond factory. The town is a regional transport and supply base (including a fuel storage ). There are also food and light industry, agriculture in the area.
