O-Jolle

The Olympic dinghy - short O- Jolle - was designed as a race boat for the 1936 Olympic Games. It is designed as a one-man boat in Cat - rigging. The hull is built in Rundspantbauweise. Due to the solid construction and running of the very good sailing characteristics, there are many old boats today.

The equipment of the O- Jolle and the materials used for them were adapted to the trend of today. The former wooden hull is manufactured today almost exclusively in a composite of fiberglass. The deck is - mostly laid mahogany - for the sake of appearance. Not only the hull changed his material. Thus, the O- Jolle got, for example, gradually a tree - vang, forestay and shrouds, VA2 - sword and an aluminum rudder blade. At first made of wood, even the rig (mast and boom ) was later built of aluminum, which allowed for much more flexibility. The forestay and the shrouds were then even adjustable. The once rigid rig transformed as a multi-adjustable instrument for regatta sailing. There is hardly a single-handed boat with such adjustable sail.

The no longer Olympic O- Jolle is numerically one of the largest national boat classes in Germany. The Class Association - the International Olympic dinghy Union ( IOU ) - has about 500 members.

The O- Jolle is sailed esp. in the countries of Holland, Switzerland, Austria, Italy and Germany. There are also scattered O dinghies in Brazil, Poland and other countries.
