Oakover River

The Oakover River is a river in the north-west of the Australian state of Western Australia. It is located in the Pilbara region.

Geography

The river rises north of Wadara Range and west of the Saltbush range nearby the settlement Junction Well. This area lies north of the Little Sandy Desert. On the western edge of an area over which the Aborigines of the Martu hold a native title, and along the Throssell Range, the Gregory Range and Isabella Range flows the Oakover River to the north, where he located southeast of the settlement Callawa on the southwestern edge of the Great Sandy Desert to the Nullagine River combined and the De Grey River forms.

History

The first European who discovered the Oakover River, Francis Gregory was. His colleague Peter Warburton crossed the river in 1873 on a camel tied to the end of his expedition through the Great Sandy Desert.

The original owners of this land were the Aborigines of the tribe of Njamal or Nyamal.
