Obergurig

Obergurig, Sorbian Hornja HORKA, is a place and the associated municipality in the district of Bautzen Saxony at the foot of Mönchswalder mountain ( 447 m). The municipality is part of the joint management Großpostwitz - Obergurig.

Geography

Obergurig is located about 4 km south of the district town of Bautzen on the northern slope of the Lusatian mountain country. The municipality is bordered by Bautzen and Großpostwitz in the east, the south and Wilthen Doberman -Gaußig in the West.

History

1272 was the first mention of Obergurig under the name Goric or Goreke.

The place name comes from the Upper Sorbian word HORKA ( altsorbisch gorka to German "hill" ), so Obergurig for "Upper Village on the hill " is.

For his statistics on the Sorbian population in Upper Lusatia Arnost Muka determined in the eighties of the 19th century had a total population of 380 inhabitants; which were 330 Sorbs ( 87%) and 50 German.

Policy

On 3 June 2007, the successor to the mayor Harald Bayn was chosen. 96 % of voters opted for the independent candidate Thomas Polpitz, who joined the CDU in 2012. The turnout was 39.3 %.

Personalities

  • January Michał Budar ( 1713-1789 ) was landed gentry in Obergurig. He was known for his commitment to the Sorbian population as a farmer advocate and founded the Budarsche Foundation.
