The region was occupied from October to December 1941 by the German Wehrmacht. After the Second World War, a planned city was built on the site of the village, with the commissioning of the nuclear power plant in Obninsk as the first commercially operated nuclear power plant in the world (now decommissioned) moved in 1954 into the limelight, which led to a large increase in population. In 1956 Obninsk received city rights.
