Obock (Region)

Obock is a region in the north of Djibouti. It is named after its chief town Obock, another larger village Khor Angar is. Obock has about 27,000 inhabitants, most of whom belong to the people of Afar.

The place Obock was first starting point of the French colonization of Djibouti, but was then abandoned in favor of Djibouti City. The area was first administered as part of Tadjoura Region, 1963 Obock region was separated as its own region.

It is bordered to the northwest by Eritrea, on the southwest by the region Tadjoura and on the east by the Red Sea, the Bab al - Mandab and the Gulf of Aden.

In the region there are many salt lakes. The river We'ima Wenz forms the border with Eritrea. 2008, there was near the coast and the offshore island of Doumeira to border conflicts between Djibouti and Eritrea.
