Occoneechee State Park

The Occoneechee State Park is a state park in the south of the U.S. state of Virginia. It is located in Mecklenburg County near the town of Clarksville and is on U.S. Highway 58 accessible. The state park on the north bank of the John H. Kerr reservoir has an area of 10.9 km ² of which about 7.7 km ² belong to an almost completely surrounded by the reservoir peninsula. In addition to various accommodation facilities, the park offers visitors 30 km of hiking trails and three boat ramps.

The name of the state parks is reminiscent of the Indian tribe of Occaneechi. They lived up to the 17th century on a flooded island in the Roanoke River today near the present park. They were attacked in 1676 during Bacon's Rebellion of a militia and later had to leave their country.

1952, the John H. Kerr Dam was completed and the reservoir was created. The Department of Conservation and Recreation of the State of Virginia opened the State Park in 1968 to leased from the United States Army Corps of Engineers land.
