Octavian Paler

Octavian Paler ( born July 2, 1926 in Lisa, Circle Fagaras; † 7 May 2007 Bucharest ) was a Romanian writer, poet and journalist.

Life

Octavian Paler, originally from the village of Lisa in Fagaras, studied philosophy and law at the University of Bucharest. In the 1960s he worked for the Romanian Radio and TV Televiziunea Română TVR, most recently as its director. From 1974 to 1979 he was a board member of the Romanian Communist Party. In 1976 he became chairman of the Journalists' Association under the rule of the communist system. From 1970 to 1983 he was also editor of the newspaper România Liberă in Bucharest and sat from 1980 to 1985 as a deputy in the Romanian Parliament.

Nevertheless, he was spied by the Securitate for his criticism of the cult of personality and the regime of Nicolae Ceauşescu and persecuted, temporarily placed under house arrest and hindering the appearance of his texts.

After the turn, he was together with Ana Blandiana and Gabriel Liiceanu co-founder of the civil rights movement group for social dialogue. In the last years of his life, he has repeatedly denounced corruption in the Romanian politics in his essays and commentaries.

His most famous works are Umbra cuvintelor ( Shadow Word ), Viata pe un peron ( Life on a platform), scrisori imaginary ( imaginary letters ), Rugaţi -VA să nu VA crească aripi ( Pray that you do not grow wings ), Don Quixote în est ( Don Quixote in the east) and Polemici cordiale ( Kind polemics ).

He died of a heart attack.
