Odalric, Count of Barcelona

Odalric, also Odalrich, Odalrih, Odelric or Udalrich (*, ? † 859) was 852-858 Count of Barcelona, Girona, Rosselló and Empúries and Margrave of Gothia.

Origin

It is generally assumed that Odalric was a Frankish nobleman. He came from the Udalrichingern, Count of Argengaus and Linzgaus on Lake Constance (presumably Udalrich II ). However, he had by his mother Engeltrud also links to the Spanish March. She was a daughter, watered I, who had 801 with Berà participated in the conquest of Barcelona and 806 received for the county of Toulouse. In a second marriage Trude Engel later married Unruoch II, Count Ternois. From this marriage came out Berengar of Toulouse, a predecessor Odalrics as Count of Barcelona and Adalhard, Abbot of Saint- Bertin. The West Frankish king Charles the Bald therefore secured with the choice Odalrics the loyalty and attachment to the to -controlling areas.

Policy

853 undertook the East Frankish king Louis the German by his son Louis the Younger an attempt to gain power over Aquitaine. The diplomatically complicated peace negotiations failed and in August 854 pulled Odalric with Charles the Bald in the fight to Aquitaine.

Around the same time succeeded Pepin II, former king of Aquitaine, the flight from the monastery prison in Saint- Médard in Soissons. The nobility in Aquitaine then turned to Louis the Younger off and stood on the side of the rebellious princes. Ludwig fled to the eastern kingdom. Mr. Pippin was in Aquitaine, but he could not assure his rule. The nobility Charles placed himself under the condition that Aquitaine recognized as a Kingdom and a son of Charles 'll appointed king. In October 855 the then eight year old son Karl ( " the child " ) was crowned at Limoges for the ( sub) King of Aquitaine. It is believed that Odalric had contributed to the good outcome of these negotiations.

856 commanded Muhammad I, the new emir of Cordoba a campaign against Barcelona and it was destroyed several castles in the County of Barcelona and plundered the country. Odalric failure was accused.

Before he was taken in the final year 864 in the monastery prison in Senlis, where he also died, succeeded Pepin II twice more to be recognized as prince of Aquitaine. The conspiratorial attempts Ludwig lasted for the Germans to dominate the country. Finally, Pepin II requested and the nobles 857 even the North Germanic Norman for help. Shortly thereafter, also acknowledged the influential Count of Auvergne, Bernard Plantevelue and abbot of Saint- Bertin Adalhard, the stepbrother Odalrics, Pepin II.

It is not certain whether Odalric stood on the side of the insurgents, but the fact that his step- brother was one of the initiators of the insurrection, it can seem possible. So he was deposed at the turn of 857/858 as Count of the Catalan counties. On March 21, he vowed 858 Charles the Bald, although again the faithfulness, but he received only the counties Argengau and Linzgau.
