Oddsskarðsgöng

The Oddsskarðsgöng is a road tunnel in the southeast of Iceland at Norðfjarðarvegur (Road No. 92). The single-track tunnel ( with passing places ) is 626 meters long and connects with Neskaupstaður Eskifjörður ( and the rest of Iceland ). It crosses the Oddsskarð at an altitude of 632 meters above the sea. It is thus Islands 's highest tunnel. Both tunnel portals have gates with which the tunnel can be closed in bad weather.

The tunnel was created from 1974 to 1977 and replaced the old one ( and only) road to Neskaupstaður over the Oddsskarð of 1949, which was however closed in winter often. Since the current tunnel is not safe for winter, there are plans to build a new base tunnel.
