Odessa Catacombs

The Catacombs of Odessa are a 2500 km-long tunnel system which extends beneath Odessa and far into the suburbs.

History

As today's Odessa was built in the 19th century, took to the floor sandstone as a cheap building material to it to build the new houses. This sandstone mines being pushed further over the decades and result today the catacombs and tunnels systems Odessa. Only a small proportion of these catacombs can be visited today.

Museum

About 17 km outside of Odessa ( on the European Route 95 in about 25 minutes by taxi to reach ), near the village of Nerubajske ( Нерубайське ) is the "Museum of the heroic guerrilla ". Here is one of the few openly accessible entrances. Parts of the applied multi-level labyrinth can be visited from here. During World War II hid here during the Battle of Odessa a troop partisans, who fought against the Romanian occupation forces and their German supporters. Among other things, the former sick-bed, a kitchen and the command post of the Soviet partisans are shown.
