Odoardo Beccari

ODOARDO Beccari ( born November 19, 1843 in Florence, † October 25, 1920 in Florence ) was an Italian traveler and botanist. Its official botanical author abbreviation is " Becc. ".

Life and work

Beccari studied in Pisa, Bologna and in the Kew Gardens in London, and then in 1865 at the behest of the White Rajas of Sarawak, Sir James Brooke, with the Marquis Giacomo Doria to Borneo and collected especially in the northwestern part of the island, among others, over 20,000 plants and 35 Orangutan Skull. 1868 returned, he published his observations in a separate journal, entitled Il nuovo italiano giornale Botanical Garden. Two years later he visited with Marchese Antinori Orazio and Arturo Issel Barka and Bogosländer that Assabbai and the Dahlak Archipelago in Abyssinia (now Eritrea).

In 1871 he went with the ornithologists Luigi Maria d' Alberti to New Guinea, from there alone after the Aru and Kai Islands and 1873 to Celebes. In 1875, he traveled for the second time New Guinea and explored especially the Arfakgebirge. After a third expedition to New Guinea in 1876, he returned to Italy.

Beccari made ​​known among other things, the Titan Arum ( Amorphophallus titanum ) with one of the largest flowers in the world in the West. During an expedition in Atjer Mantior on Sumatra he observed on August 6, 1878, the leaves and a fruiting plant, on September 5, 1878 flowered example of this kind, he sent some tubers and seeds to Florence. Beccari published his discovery in November 1878 Gardeners Chronicle and named the plant Conophallus titanum. Giovanni Arcangeli was the type 1879 its currently valid scientific name Amorphophallus titanum ( Becc. ) Becc. ex Arcang.
