Ödön Zombori

Odon Zombori ( born September 16, 1906 in Szenta, † November 29, 1989 in Budapest) was a Hungarian wrestler.

Career

Odon Zombori began as a teenager in Budapest with the rings. He came from a family in which several members dedicated themselves to the struggle. So his brother Gyula was an outstanding wrestler and Vice European Champion 1930 in Greco-Roman style in the welterweight division. Odon belonged to the Magyar Atlétikai Club (MAC) Budapest.

At the international wrestling mat Odon first appeared in the 1928 Olympics in Amsterdam. He came Bantamweight, Greco-Roman style, three point victories, but then resigned from after a defeat against Giovanni Gozzi from Italy and took a good 5th place. At the European Championship 1929 in Dortmund, he came in Greco- Roman style two point victories and retired again after a defeat, this time against Svend Martinsen from Norway, due to attainment of 5 error points.

In 1930 he competed at the European Championships in Stockholm in Greco-Roman featherweight and won his first medal. After two victories, he failed this time at the famous Kustaa Pihlajamäki from Finland. At the European Championships 1931 in Prague Odon reached only the ungrateful 4th place at featherweight in Greco- Roman style. But he took in the same year for the first time at the European Championships at home in Budapest in free style and won there in superior style the European title.

With high hopes Odon therefore went to the 1932 Olympic Games in Los Angeles. Although he disappointed in the Greco-Roman style, as he was eliminated after two losses, but won in free style bantamweight silver medal. In the final he defeated while the outstanding Robert E. Pearce from the USA. At the European Championships in 1933 in Helsinki Odon finally won a title in Greco- Roman style. He won the bantamweight despite one defeat against Herman Tuvesson from Sweden. The second title in the free style of the same year in Paris bantamweight made ​​1933 one of the most successful years of his career.

After these Olympics Odon Zombori ended his wrestler 's career. He survived the war in Budapest and emigrated in 1948 shortly before the rise of the communists in Hungary to the United States, where he lived for over forty years and is buried in Glendale.
